Are You Able to Crack It? That Forgotten Netherlands Invention Which Shaped the Contemporary World
One can find numerous candidates to claim the title of “planet’s greatest invention.” The wheel. The printing press. The combustion motor.
According to a recent publication, though, that title belongs to the mechanised sawmill invented through Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Before mechanised sawing, constructing a simple trading ship necessitated approximately ten sawyers laboring over 90 days,” notes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-driven lumber mills, the same amount of processed timber might be manufactured in less than a week.”
Thanks to their speedy mechanical cutter, which turned timber to planks using virtually no manual labor, Dutch builders were able to construct vessels faster compared to any other nation, an advantage that sparked one hundred years of Netherlands naval, financial as well as artistic supremacy in the continent and the globe.

The inventor's lumber mill, argues the writer, was “mankind’s first true factory apparatus.” A windmill rotated a wheel.
