India's capital Wakes Up to Dangerous Smog After Celebrations
On Tuesday morning citizens of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with exposed to severely hazardous air that fell into the "critical" level.
Alarming Air Quality Measurements
Multiple areas of Delhi recorded an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the healthy limit established by the World Health Organization.
Particular areas, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of eighteen hundred, equating to 15-20x above safe limits.
Firecracker Restrictions and Recent Changes
Beginning in 2020, officials had enforced a complete ban on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the dangerous pollution that blankets the capital as colder weather sets in.
Nevertheless earlier this year, the current regional leadership approached the highest court to seek a modification of the prohibition.
The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – which have been doubted by environmentalists as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a compromise between "cultural practices and environment".

Much to the frustration of medical and ecological advocates, judges agreed to the proposal, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be set off during designated time windows throughout the celebrations.
Throughout the festival evening, there was widespread violation of the time restrictions across the capital, with minimal regulation regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.
Numerous recording stations throughout the city showed contamination reaching highest levels around the night hours to some of the worst levels seen during celebrations in at least recent memory.
Cross-Border Consequences
The widespread use of fireworks during the festival also triggered a controversy with bordering the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab partially attributing worsening air quality in their urban centers on hazardous particles traveling from India following the festivities.
Persistent Environmental Issue
Alarmingly severe concentrations of pollution in the city have remained as a major challenge for more than 15 years, with the problem showing no improvement.
Near Diwali, the concentration of toxic particles in the air has been documented to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the most severe readings ever documented in the Chinese city, which was once considered as the world's most polluted urban center.
Multiple Pollution Contributors
This crisis in the city is caused by a mix of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, construction activities, waste incineration and smoke from agricultural fires in nearby areas of neighboring agricultural zones.
Throughout these areas, farmers illegally burn crop residue to clear them quickly, producing dangerous haze that remains stagnant over the city as winter air arrives.
Medical and Economic Consequences
Both financial and medical toll on the approximately 33 million inhabitants calling home the metropolitan zone is significant, according to multiple studies.
This pollution leads to increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and respiratory conditions, and can result in oncological diseases.
Air quality crisis is calculated to be responsible for ten thousand untimely mortalities annually in Delhi.
