RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of entry passages leading to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as Daesh - established jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their valour," Healey said. "Including them were numerous British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out militants who threaten our security, shows how British military are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush killed two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
