Administration officials confirmed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on earlier warnings in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s process for terminating staff.

Although Vought did not specify which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson stated that notices had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers announced that employees at the Education Department would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services used by the public and vowed to challenge the actions in court.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the funding lapse as an pretext to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver critical services to the public nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the AFGE.

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be ended before then.

Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.

“It is wrong to make federal employees suffer because our elected officials in Congress and the White House have failed to keep our government open and operational,” the advocate stated.
